When can a tyre not be repaired?

Before repairing a tyre, it is assessed to be sure that it is still safe for road use. A tyre may be deemed unsafe for road use if:

  • The tyre has been run whilst flat – causing irreparable damage to the sidewall that isn’t always visible
  • The damage is on the sidewall
  • The tyre is showing visible bead wire
  • The rubber or tread has separated
  • Leaking fluid from faulty suspension or brakes has caused the tyre to deteriorate
  • Internal sidewalls show signs of overheating from a long term low pressure
  • The damaged area is too large to be repaired
  • The tyre has already reached its minimum tread depth for replacement

All of these points are in place to ensure that you maintain the highest standard of duty of care possible to your drivers, while reducing fleet downtime caused by preventable breakdowns.

Can run flat tyres be repaired?

A number of fleets equip their vehicles with run flat tyres to help avoid the potentially dangerous effects of a tyre blow-out. While the composition of a run flat tyre is slightly different to that of a normal tyre, they can still be repaired provided they are within safe parameters as outlined by BS AU 159 and returned to the road for continued use.

As run flat tyres are only designed to last at slow speeds for a limited distance after a puncture, any repair work is advised to be carried out quickly, or for the wheel to be removed and replaced until the tyre can be repaired.
